I am considering releasing all my Pro themes for free, but still charging for forum support. I am sure people would love to use them and would still need help in modifying them, but I am curious about how the current customers would take it.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your business, which is why I am seeking feedback. However, I feel that to grow, we might need more interested people and perhaps the free route would spread the word and people would be interested in support.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Hi Bryan,

I would like to see you grow. Hence, if you think that releasing all of the Pro themes for free would help that to occur, I say, "Go for it!"

In case you were wondering, I wouldn't feel cheated that someone was getting something free that I did not. I am VERY DELIGHTED with your Magatheme! I am incredibly pleased with all of the personalized assistance that you have been providing. It is my hope that I have helped you to feel very, very needed ... ??

Bryan, I want to see you stay in business -- and grow -- and be free to continue to create such wonderful products. It enhances me, too, when you do well!!

    'Best of luck to you,
    Marlene

Thanks for the feedback, like I said, it's something I've been thinking about. Hopefully, the real value lies in being able to come to a forum where you can get some answers to questions you have. Nothing takes longer than learning something by trial and error!

I wouldn't feel ripped off. I'd like to see you grow. My question/concern is: would this be a more profitable use of your time? Another idea: perhaps you could sell/package not just access to forum help but tutorials. Just my 2 cents. Good luck to you!

It wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit. After all, the price of your themes is very reasonable... I don't think anyone will mind. You're the only one that can make an educated decision on whether or not the free route is the way to go...I haven't a clue. (mangoman's tutorial idea sounds good to me)

Bryan, buying your Clean Home Pro theme was one of the best purchases I've ever made. Being able to come to the forum is also invaluable. I'm back here again today for more help. I wouldn't feel bad if you offered the theme for free, but I do wonder how many people would pay for forum support. Knowing myself, I probably would just try to muck it out on my own before laying down cash for support. Kind of like the guy who refuses to ask for directions, I suppose:)

Just my thoughts. I do wish you all the best, keep up the great work.

What if there was a way to provide incentive for people to promote your work, like "Free if you include the GazelleThemes link on the bottom of the page. Pay for the theme to remove the link." Maybe impossible to enforce, but it's an idea.

Thanks for the kind words Ethan, you bring up some great points... I'm still thinking about it! The link idea is great, perhaps I'll try it for a while and see what happens...

I think it is a interesting and valid question actually, and as this sort of situation pops up from time to time I've seen it addressed in a number of different ways.

A: Big company decides to release product for free many has paid for and are really unapologetic about it - reaction from previous buyers is "we want our money back" - I can't blame them, I would have too.

B: Small company decides to release product for free some has paid a little for - previous buyers think it's ok since they released a good, cheap product and have given good support. - Sounds alright.

C: Small company decides to release product for free some has paid a little for but puts up a poll on to what charity to donate all or a part of the income from the previously sold product. -Love it!

Wanted to chime in here, as I think Clean Home/ Clean Home Pro is one of the best themes I've found out there and one of the only ones of its kind (believe me, I looked). I also think the price was very reasonable compared to others and for the product, and it wouldn't annoy me in the least if it were offered free after having paid for it. I think the support is invaluableā€“I don't know how many design houses or theme creators even offer the sort of level that you have. I'd certainly be willing to pay for it (for a free theme) and I think a lot of others who are out there are in the same boat, i.e. basic CSS knowledge but trying to customize their blogs on their own and with unique questions, and can easily get in over their heads. Good luck!

What about trying a "pay what you think it's worth" model? Some musicians and video games have done this with really good results.

I do think it is a great theme and worth paying for. I would clarify what you get for the purchase also. Plus add some perks maybe. ie...

Pay what you think it is worth! Lifetime access to...
    - Clean Home Pro theme
    - Megatheme Pro
    - Exclusive developer support
    - Use themes for multiple sites (unlimited)
    - Any future themes free
    - Access to community customizations and tips

Wish I would have read this before just buying! Yes, I'm totally kidding.

I think $20 with a year of support is an incredible deal. Happy to pay it and wouldn't be the least bit offended by it going free.

OK, I just bought it, but even my cheap self wouldn't begrudge your growing your business by shifting MagaPro free. Now if I can just get my thumbnails working ...
